Distinguished Members

Members who have established a program of giving to St. John  through the establishment of an honour, award, bursary and/or scholarship have been distinguished for their contributions. See the biography of the distinguished member and their contribution.

  Margaret MacLaren
Margaret MacLaren joined St. John Ambulance in 1941 in Saint John, New Brunswick. In 1944 she joined the original group of 10 St. John Officers and went overseas to prepare for the large number of SJA nursing auxiliaries and ambulance drivers who followed. She held the position of Superintendent-in-Chief with St. John Ambulance Brigade Nursing Divisions from 1944-1963. Ms. MacLaren was invested as Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St. John on July 3, 1963, the first time a Canadian had been so honoured.
When Miss MacLaren died in 1963, the Margaret MacLaren Memorial Fund was established. Since 1963, the Fund has been assisting St. John Ambulance volunteers who have decided to pursue a career in nursing. This bursary bears testimony to her distinguished service to St. John, her keen interest in the nursing profession and her belief in the need for well-educated nurses.

  James A. Albery
James Albery joined the St. John Ambulance Brigade in 1965 as a member of the 159 Toronto (Humewood) Ambulance Division and during his 31 year Brigade career, held Divisional, Corps, Provincial and National Officer positions.

Throughout his years with the Brigade, he remained dedicated to the development, expansion and ideals of the Cadet and Crusader program. In recognition of his extraordinary efforts and many achievements, he was promoted to the grade of Knight of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in 1995.

It is because of his continued commitment to ensuring that today’s youth have every opportunity to participate fully and meaningfully as citizens in Canadian society that the J.A. Albery Youth Bursary was established. The bursary is aimed at providing post-secondary education funding for youth members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.

Mrs. Gilmour also served as Lady-Superintendent-in-Chief and was succeeded by Margaret MacLaren in 1946.
