The eight pointed white cross on a black background was originally worn by the merchants of the Italian republic of Amalfi (circa 1000 AD) and was adopted by the Benedictine monks as recognition for the generosity of the merchants who purchased land on which they constructed a hospital and monastery to care for the sick and injured. St. John Ambulance is a leading “care” charity internationally; with a global membership of nearly 300,000. St. John Eye Hospital
The Order of St. John  has been helping people with eye problems in the Middle East since the 19th century. The St John Eye Hospital will provide ophthalmic care of high quality and relevance to the people of the region irrespective of race, creed, social class and ability to pay, and provide teaching and training to Doctors and Nurses in the region, so that they in turn may provide skilled and quality care in their communities.
