Location: Ottawa, ON (hybrid or remote work available)
Status: Full-time contract until March 31st, 2026 (approximately 37.5 hours per week)
Language Profile: Fluency in English is required, and French language skills are an asset.
Salary Range: $70,000 - $75,000 per year

We are seeking a passionate and skilled First Aid Technical Writer, who will focus on creating clear, concise documentation to explain complex information for a broad audience. 

In this pivotal role, you will craft state-of-the-art training materials that will shape the future of pre-hospital patient care and first aid training in Canada.

Your Role:

  • Elevate and/or create clear and engaging training materials for classroom and blended training. 
  • Collaborate and innovate with the Instructional Design team to produce results driven project objectives. 
  • Apply evidence-based practices by incorporating researched protocols into training materials.
  • Identify and implement solutions proactively through collaboration with SJA. provincial/territorial service centers (Councils). 
  • Maintain brand integrity ensuring all training publications reflect SJA’s brand and visual styles.

 

 Supporting the Instructional Design Team:

  • Collaborative development through partnering with the instructional designers to create engaging and pedagogically sound materials.
  • Content integration by translating complex medical topics into accessible content for learners.
  • Quality assurance by reviewing and refining content to maintain high standards of accuracy and professionalism.
  • Technical expertise applied through the utilization of tools like Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint for seamless document management and collaboration.

 

Ultimate Outcomes:

  • Enhance the quality and effectiveness of first aid training across Canada.
  • Ensure training materials are accurate, up-to-date, and reflect best practices.
  • Support the instructional design team in creating comprehensive educational content.
  • Maintain the integrity and professionalism of SJA’s training publications.

 

While technical writers explain how things work, instructional designers teach people how to do things. Both roles are essential and complement each other in creating comprehensive educational and informational content. Your work as a First Aid Technical Writer at SJA will be integral to the success of our training programs, enhancing our ability to provide top-tier training across Canada.

Qualifications:

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Ability to work well in a team and collaborate with various stakeholders
  • A post-secondary degree in a relevant discipline; education or experience in workplace training or adult education is an asset
  • Proven experience (3-5 years) as a technical writer or similar role with certifications in technical writing or similar disciplines. 
  • Experience developing user manuals, instructor guides, and other technical documentation
  • Familiarity with industry-specific knowledge in first aid, pre-hospital patient care, and/or wilderness first aid training is a requirement. 
  • Exceptional technical writing, editing, and proofreading skills to develop medically complex topics into consumable content for a diverse audience
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple project components through effective time management.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft SharePoint for collaboration
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent research skills to gather information from various sources
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex technical concepts
  • Problem-solving skills to identify and propose solutions
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in additional languages, particularly French, is an asset
