The Advanced First Aid (AFA) Training Content Specialist Role
As the Advanced First Aid (AFA) Training Content Specialist, you will work within a multidisciplinary team in the SJA centralized National Training department responsible for the design, production, evaluation, and maintenance of SJA’s core training programs. The programs are supported by research and a quality assurance process including training standards, policies, and procedures, along with the publication and/or alternate delivery models of the core products.

Your primary role is supporting the update of the AFA training program by providing your subject matter expertise and guidance in analyzing, reviewing, and writing content for the reference guide, instructor guide and corresponding instructor PowerPoint slides and the blended e-learning content. You will work closely with the lead AFA Instructional Designer to ensure the content is accurate, accessible and compliant to Canadian Standards Association (CSA). You are the key reviewer of the final program components prior to translation, publication and Canada-wide implementation.

Primary Responsibilities:
As an AFA Training Content Specialist, you will:

  • Apply your subject matter expertise in advanced first aid/emergency medical response with SJA to write clear and concise first aid training content for diverse audiences.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the SJA AFA training program, policies, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with SJA Councils to ensure the AFA program and messaging contains accurate program and product information.
  • Collaborate with the Instructional Design (ID) team, specifically the lead AFA ID to ensure project objectives are met through regular meetings, brainstorming and knowledge exchanges.
  • Develop comprehensive AFA training materials including student, instructor, and program administration materials.
  • Liaise with additional SJA subject matter experts and coordinate AFA program reviews, quality assurance (QA) processes and implementation of new program materials and protocols, as needed.
  • Respond to instructor and public enquiries about the AFA program and content.
  • Keep current of research, government regulations, and training standards in the fields of first aid, resuscitation, health and safety, in relation to SJA training programs.
  • Recommend where applicable, interactive course elements, graphics, videos, and other course media that enhances the learning experience.
  • Maintain the integrity of St. John Ambulance’s brand and visual styles throughout our training publications.


Qualifications:
As an AFA Training Content Specialist, you will have:

  • AFA certification as an instructor, and significant AFA course delivery experience and/or status as an AFA Instructor Trainer.
  • Knowledge of training standards, policies, and procedures (e.g. CSA, ILCOR, CLC, & HSFC), Provincial First Aid regulations and training standards across Canada.
  • Familiarity with first aid or related health field training delivery models.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory, instructional skills, and program development.
  • Exceptional technical writing, editing and proofreading skills to develop medically complex topics into consumable content for a diversity of learning styles.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills to explain complex topics in simple terms to various staff as required.
  • The ability to work remotely and independently from home, manage multiple project components through effective time management, and build professional and diplomatic working relationships in an online environment with internal project stakeholders.


Assets:
Ideally, you will also bring one or more of the following assets to the role:

  • Bilingualism in English and French.
  • A diploma or certificate in Adult Education.
  • Experience in the development of training standards, policies, and procedures, assessment of student learning, testing and program methodologies. •    Post-secondary education as a paramedic, pre-hospital care or health and safety.
  • Experience in project management, specifically with updating and launching training programs.
  • Experience in reviewing and evaluating training content and product quality.
  • Living in and/or relocating to the greater Ottawa area would be preferred
