About the Role:

In response to the Emergency Management Project (EMP) funded by the Government of Canada (Public Safety Canada), the St. John Ambulance National Office (SJANO) Instructional Design department is seeking a Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Content Developer to support the development of the WFA training program. Specifically, the Content Developer will provide content support and writing in the area of wilderness medicine and first aid – providing specific knowledge and guidance around first aid scenarios and procedures within a remote/wilderness context. This includes fact-checking existing content, identifying relevant (Canadian) sources, writing content, creating scenarios, and other material development for the course.

The Content Developer needs extensive experience around first response in a wilderness setting, as well as a strong background in wilderness medicine. The successful candidate will provide guidance on protocols, roles and responsibilities, decision making, and other areas related to the wilderness first aid program.

Additionally, the successful candidate will be skilled in writing content for instructional courses and able to work collaboratively on documentation. They will report to the Emergency Management Program Manager and will work closely with the Instructional Design team assigned to the WFA project.
 

Primary Responsibilities:

As a Content Developer you will:

  • Apply your subject matter expertise in wilderness first aid to write clear and concise first aid training content for diverse audiences.
  • Research and implement current and effective learning development approaches and strategies regarding wilderness first aid.
  • Collaborate with the SJANO Instructional Design team, specifically the WFA Instructional Designer to ensure project objectives are met through regular meetings, brainstorming and knowledge exchanges.
  • Recommend where applicable, interactive course elements, graphics, videos and other course media that enhances the learning experience.
  • Proactively identify efficiencies, gaps and opportunities and work to implement or troubleshoot solutions using relevant tools and resources.
  • Maintain the integrity of St. John Ambulance’s brand and visual styles throughout our training publications.

 

Qualifications:

As a Content Developer, you will have:

  • Five or more years of experience in developing and/or delivering first aid training, preferably SJA courses.
  • Three of more years of professional wilderness experience in a first aid/first response role.
  • Three or more years of experience developing wilderness training materials including first aid.
  • A post-secondary degree in a relevant discipline and ideally, education or relevant experience in Adult Education.
  • Ideally, formal wilderness first aid training and/or general knowledge of wilderness emergency preparedness.
  • Exceptional technical writing, editing and proofreading skills to develop medically complex topics into consumable content for a diversity of learning styles.
  • The ability to work in a hybrid work environment and manage multiple project components through effective time management.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite. (SJA uses Microsoft Teams as our collaboration platform.)
  • Fluency in English; bilingual preferred.

Remuneration and Benefits:

This position offers $65,000 to $70,000 annually with benefits, pension, and vacation.
