First aid training in a classroom

What You Will Do:

  • Deliver engaging, professional first aid training to workplaces and the general public.
  • Instruct WorkSafeBC-approved Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced First Aid courses.
  • Teach a variety of vital community programs, including Emergency and Standard First Aid (CPR C), Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers, and Youth programs like Babysitting Basics.
  • Represent St. John Ambulance with professionalism and integrity in every class.

Where You Can Grow:

Upskill

Receive ongoing training to teach higher-level and specialized safety courses.

Advance

Build a career path into leadership roles such as Mentor, Course Monitor, or Instructor Trainer.

Do You Meet the Prerequisites?

To ensure the highest quality of training, we require all applicants to meet the following criteria before applying:

Age

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Certification

Have held an intermediate or higher level first aid certificate for at least 2 years.

Experience

Have been a designated first aider at a Basic level or higher for at least one year

Our Instructor Development Program (IDP):

Think of the IDP as your “learn, practice, and get signed off” path to becoming an instructor. You will complete a short set of required courses, practice teaching with support, and then teach one full class while an evaluator observes.

How It Works

Instructor School itself is about 60 hours over roughly 6 weeks; the full certification process often takes a few months in total, depending on your schedule and available classes.

Step 1

Complete the WorkSafeBC Jurisprudence Package
  • This is a short, open-book requirements package that confirms you understand the WorkSafeBC rules and expectations for workplace first aid instruction in B.C.

Step 2

Complete the St. John Ambulance IDP training

including:

  • An interview to determine suitability to become an instructor.
  • St. John Ambulance Intermediate First Aid: This is a 2-day course from 830 am to 430pm and must be completed within 3 months prior to instructor training (two days, 8 hours each)
  • A short skills assessment to confirm you are ready for instructor training (one evening, 4 hours)
  • Module 1: How adults learn and how to run an effective class (two evenings, 4 hours each)
  • Module 2: How our programs work (standards, paperwork, and expectations) (two evenings, 4 hours each)
  • Module 3: Practice teaching first aid, CPR, and related courses (2 weekends, including Friday evenings, 40 hours)
    3.

Step 3

Team-teach with experienced instructors
  • You will co-teach with an experienced instructor so you can learn the flow of the course, practice delivery, and get feedback in a real classroom.
  • Your Instructor Trainer will recommend how many co-teaching sessions you need based on your readiness and comfort level. Many people co-teach 2–3 Intermediate First Aid classes at this stage.
  • Timing varies because it depends on class availability and your schedule — this stage can take as little as about 4 weeks, but more commonly 2–3 months.

Step 4

Successfully complete a monitored 16-hour Intermediate First Aid class
  • This is your final “check-out” step. You will teach a full 2-day Intermediate First Aid course (about 16 hours) while a Monitor Instructor observes and completes an evaluation.
  • After the class, the branch submits the evaluation (typically within about 1 week). Once it is reviewed and approved, you will be issued your instructor certification and can begin teaching with the branch.
