As a first responder, I am honoured to volunteer as part of the reception centre team. Training alongside our ESS team throughout the year ensures that we are ready to respond quickly and with purpose whenever an evacuation occurs. Many evacuees arrive with only what they could carry, often overwhelmed and uncertain about what comes next. In those moments, I am deeply humbled to offer support—whether through a welcoming smile, addressing medical needs, guiding them to the right services, or simply listening. Knowing our roles and working as a team allows us to meet both the safety and emotional needs of evacuees when they need it most.
