Meet Joy, Maggie & Elaine!

Volunteering Since 2007

Elaine has been sharing the comfort and calm of her dogs, Maggie and Joy, with people in need since 2007, and in that time, they’ve witnessed more than a few unforgettable moments.

One of those moments came when Maggie was asked to lie beside a young girl who had just undergone brain surgery. The nurses made a deal with the child: if she stayed completely still and didn’t scream while her stitches were removed, she could cuddle with Maggie. As the procedure began, silent tears rolled down both their faces, but the child never moved. When it was over, Maggie gently wiped the child’s tears with her nose, and the little girl reached out and did the same. The whole room was moved to tears.

Years later, Joy had her own extraordinary moment during a visit with a dementia patient who hadn’t spoken or responded to anyone for some time. As Joy approached, she leaned in and gave him a soft kiss. He opened his eyes, smiled, and started speaking, holding Joy close and not wanting her to leave. The staff later shared that he had raised border collies, making the connection with Joy especially meaningful.

How Does It Feel to Give Back?

“I felt great knowing how much I can do to help someone with something as little as just sharing my dogs during a very stressful time. Makes me feel on top of the world.” – Elaine S.
