Meet Roo & Sally!
Whether visiting a classroom or sitting quietly beside someone in their final moments, Roo has a gentle gift: helping people feel safe, calm, and supported. With her handler Sally by her side, Roo has become a trusted friend in her community offering comfort in schools, universities, and hospices alike.
At Grosvenor Wentworth Park School, a nervous Grade 3 student was too afraid to get on the bus for a safety training exercise. Sally introduced Roo and asked if he’d like her company. He agreed and bravely held Roo’s leash as they stepped onto the bus together.
Roo had never been on a bus before either, so Sally told the boy that Roo might be a little nervous, too. They found a seat, chatted with the driver, and even walked all the way to the back before exiting through the emergency door. Thanks to Roo, the student returned to class calm and proud!
At Hospice Halifax, Roo became a weekly visitor for one woman who found great comfort in her presence. On this particular visit, the room was full of family and friends. The woman would be receiving MAID (medical assistance in dying) within the next 30 minutes.
Roo quietly climbed into her lap and stayed for 10 minutes, offering comfort and companionship in her final moments. In that peaceful goodbye, Roo reminded everyone of the deep, silent connection animals can share with us, especially when we need it most.
How Does It Feel to Give Back?
“Seeing how Roo and I can help people feel less anxious, provide support, brighten their day, or bring joy to people, whether at a school, university or hospice, makes me feel like each interaction, even if short, is impactful. It makes me feel proud about what Roo and I do as an SJA Therapy Dog Team.” – Sally C.
