The Opioid Crisis in British Columbia
Opioid poisoning remains a critical public health emergency, affecting individuals, families, and communities. Since 2016, more than 14,000 lives have been lost to toxic drug overdoses in British Columbia alone. In 2023, 2,308 lives were lost, with fentanyl contributing to 86% of these deaths. On average, six British Columbians die every day due to opioid poisoning, occurring in homes, workplaces, and public spaces.
Empowering Communities to Save Lives
With the crisis worsening, St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon is offering Opioid Poisoning Response Training (OPRT) to equip individuals with the skills and confidence to respond effectively in emergencies.
What You Will Learn
Our hands-on training includes:
1. Recognizing Signs of Opioid Poisoning
- Learn to identify symptoms and respond promptly.
2. Step-by-Step Emergency Response
- Follow a structured approach to managing an opioid overdose.
3. Administering Naloxone
- Learn how to administer naloxone (IM & nasal) to reverse opioid poisoning.
4. Reducing Stigma & Promoting Compassion
- Foster safer, more supportive environments for individuals who use substances.
5. Self-Care Strategies for Poisoning Overdose Responders
- Learn essential strategies to manage stress and prevent burnout while supporting others in high-pressure situations.
