The Multimedia Design Specialist’s Role 

In response to a funding grant from the Government of Canada (Public Safety Canada), St. John Ambulance is building a new Emergency Management Program (EMP) to better prepare our volunteers across Canada to respond to emergencies and disasters when they occur. Part of the project is a refresh of several key training courses taken by our volunteers, and that refresh requires updates to the visual content. St. John Ambulance is seeking a talented Multimedia Design Specialist for a term until March 31, 2026 to support this initiative.

As the Multimedia Design Specialist, you will work within a multidisciplinary team in our centralized National Office responsible for the design, production, evaluation, and maintenance of St. John Ambulance PSC-funded training programs. This team is tasked with developing or refreshing our first aid and first responder courses, as well as developing new courses in leadership, cultural awareness, and emergency preparedness. As someone who loves to draw, your primary responsibility will be creating original visual assets to support the course development process but as this is a multi-faceted role you will also flex your multi-media skills to design animations, e-learning interactions, infographics, and social media. We are seeking a candidate who has a broad range of skills in the multimedia sphere and who is ready to reach ahead to trial new techniques and technologies.  

This role requires a senior proficiency in graphical design. The ideal candidate will have an education background in new media and/or education technology. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite is required.

Primary Responsibilities 

As a Multimedia Design Specialist, you will: 

  • Design, develop, test, implement and evaluate engaging digital media assets (predominately original graphic designs) to support learning objectives for instructor-led, online, and blended training programs for adult learners.  
  • Collaborate with internal and external project stakeholders, specifically the instructional design team, external vendors, and subject matter experts to ensure project deliverables are met. 
  • Evolve and innovate training assets to continuously improve the learning experience. Design a standardized ‘look and feel’ to maintain content style. 
  • Design e-learning elements to be implemented into the Brightspace Learning Management System (LMS). 
  • Develop assets that adhere to the principles of inclusive and accessible design, appeal to a diversity of learners and W3C standards.  
  • Design and develop program promotional and marketing materials as needed. 
  • Proactively identify efficiencies, gaps and opportunities in our design processes and implement or troubleshoot using relevant tools and resources. Advise on new technologies to improve quality and efficiency.   
  • Practice exceptional data hygiene and security for files pertaining to creative and visual projects including shared files, storage, and backups. 
  • Maintain the integrity of St. John Ambulance’s brand and visual styles and adhere to asset licensing and copyright regulations.  

 

Qualifications 

As a Multimedia Design Specialist, you will have: 
 

  • A post-secondary diploma or degree with a concentration in Graphical Design, New Media, Animation, Education Technologies, or a related discipline and/or work experience.  
  • A minimum of 4-5 years of experience designing digital media assets, ideally for training programs adhering to adult learning principals. 
  • Experience designing, producing, testing, launching digital content (e-learning, graphics, animations, video, podcasts, virtual training) that adheres to learning management system and accessibility standards. (Note that experience with creating animations or the interest and ability to hone your skills in animation is the ideal.)  
  • Proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Photoshop and Illustrator. Knowledge with Adobe Animate, After Effects and Premiere.  
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (we use Microsoft Teams as our collaborative platform).  
  • Creative eye for detail with the ability to craft innovative designs based on basic concepts and mock-up content. 
  • Ability to work remotely and independently from home, manage multiple project elements through effective time management and build professional and diplomatic working relationships in an online environment with internal and external project stakeholders.  
  • Fluency in English. Fluency in both English and French is highly desirable. 
  • A portfolio of your previous work that showcases your multimedia talents.  

 

Assets 

Ideally, you will also bring one or more of the following assets to this role: 

  • Experience working with a not-for-profit organization working with members of vulnerable communities in Canada.   
  • Familiarity with medical/first aid terminology and/or St. John Ambulance training programs. 
  • Experience with volunteerism at the local community or international levels.

Remuneration and Benefits   

This position offers $65,000-75,000 per annum based on qualifications and experience and includes full benefits (Health and Dental) and three weeks’ vacation.
