Make the new B.C. CPR & AED standard manageable

CPR, AED, and Emergency Response in BC Schools

Medical emergencies can happen anywhere at school—during class, in the gym, or on the field. To help students respond, the BC Grade 10 Physical and Health Education curriculum now includes “basic principles for responding to emergencies, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) learning.”

Helping Grade 10 PHE Teachers Deliver CPR & AED Training

St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon provides curriculum-aligned options that make it easier to teach emergency response, CPR, and AED skills—without adding unnecessary workload or cost for schools.

What You and Your Students Will Learn

Our support helps you teach and practice:

1. Recognizing an Emergency

  • Students learn to notice when someone needs help and when to act.

2. Basic Emergency Response Steps

  • A clear, simple sequence—check, call, care—that teachers can easily walk students through.

3. CPR Fundamentals

  • When and how to start chest compressions, with guidance to help students remember the key steps.

4. Using an AED

  • What an AED is, where to find one, and how to follow its prompts with confidence in a school setting.
