Make the new B.C. CPR & AED standard manageable

This page is for BC Grade 10 PHE teachers and school leaders who need a practical way to deliver basic emergency response, CPR, and AED learning. Tell us about your classes and get options, pricing, and materials you can share with your school team.

Grade 10 PHE CPR & AED Training Program

Medical emergencies can happen anywhere at school—during class, in the gym, or on the field. To help students respond, the BC Grade 10 Physical and Health Education curriculum now includes “basic principles for responding to emergencies, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) learning.”

Helping Grade 10 PHE Teachers Deliver CPR & AED Training

St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon provides curriculum-aligned options that make it easier to teach emergency response, CPR, and AED skills—without adding unnecessary workload or cost for schools.

What You and Your Students Will Learn

Using an AED
  • What an AED is, where to find one, and how to follow its prompts with confidence in a school setting.

How the Program Works

Every school is different, so this program is built as a simple three-step model. Schools select the right mix of teacher training, student learning methods, and equipment support to deliver CPR/AED learning confidently and add OPRT when needed.

STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR TEACHER TRAINING AND SUPPORT OPTIONS

We offer flexible CPR & AED training and opioid poisoning response training options for teachers.

Available in both public and private class options, either in-person or online.

Step 2: CHOOSE YOUR STUDENT CPR & AED LEARNING METHODS

We provide flexible CPR & AED teaching solutions for curriculum-aligned delivery.

Simply pick the mix that fits your classroom time, support level, and equipment.

STEP 3: ARRANGE your Training EQUIPMENT

We have all the practical training equipment you need to run your class.

Order CPR manikins, AED trainer units, and pocket masks from us.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SETTING UP YOUR CPR & AED TRAINING PROGRAM
Every school’s schedule and resources are different. This guide walks you through the three steps and helps you choose the options that best match your staffing, time, and budget.

FAQs

Is this a certified course?

No, it is designed for curriculum requirements. Students can receive an optional certificate of completion for a $5 fee.

Do teachers need to be certified to deliver the teacher-led option?

We strongly recommend teachers have a valid CPR-A (or higher) certificate. Teachers can deliver using SJA materials if they hold a valid CPR-A (or higher) certificate, or complete our online refresher + virtual skills check-in.

What do I need to complete the virtual skills check-in?

After successfully completing the 2-hour CPR/AED online refresher modules, you can book a 15-minute virtual skills check-in with our instructors to confirm CPR skills. You will need internet access, a webcam, and a manikin for the check-in.

Can schools choose only the student online theory (without the practical)?

Yes—schools can use online theory only if they plan to deliver the practical component internally, or if they want to start with theory first. We strongly recommend hands-on practice to build skill confidence.

Can schools book only the instructor-led practical session?

Yes—if the school has already delivered theory (online modules or teacher-led), they can book the 2-hour instructor-led practical as a standalone component.

Who can receive OPRT?

It can be delivered to teachers, staff, students, or any combination of these groups.

Can schools choose only CPR/AED without OPRT?

Yes—OPRT is an optional add-on, though highly recommended since naloxone kits are mandated on-site.

Can schools use their own equipment?

Yes—if schools already have manikins, AED trainers, and pocket masks, they can use them. Schools can also purchase these items directly through SJA.
