FR-Gap Update

Course Description

In British Columbia, Emergency Medical provision (outside WorkSafeBC) is legislated by the Emergency Health Act, the Emergency Medical Assistants Act, and their associated regulations.  In 2021, in response to the changing landscape of Emergency Medical Services, multiple stakeholders, including individual Emergency Medical Attendants (EMAs), provider agencies, training agencies, legislators and regulators, submitted a proposal to amend the regulations and, therefore, the scope of practice of the different levels of EMAs. In September of 2022, the minister of Health, under ministerial order M292, amended the regulations with the stipulation that the EMA must demonstrate they have been trained in the updated scope.

This blended workshop (8 hours online self-study and 1 day in-classroom) is approved by the BC Emergency Medical Assistant Licensing Board (BCEMALB).  Participants, who are currently licensed in British Columbia as a First Responder (FR), will be updated to the new scope of practice as per the 2022 Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 requirements from the BCEMALB.

CERTIFICATION
Upon successful of the workshop, participants will be certified with the FR-Gap Update from St. John Ambulance.  The certification will be accepted by BCEMALB as proof that the holder has completed the 2022 Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 requirements.
