Joint Health & Safety Certification Training

A Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) is composed of worker and manager/employer representatives. Together, they commit to improving health and safety conditions in the workplace. Committees identify potential health and safety issues and bring them to the employer’s attention. As well, a designated worker member of the committee must inspect the workplace monthly. At least two members of the committee must be fully certified, having completed training levels 1 and 2.
St. John Ambulance currently both Joint Health & Safety Committee training certifications for levels 1 and 2. The training is designed to help set up committees for success in providing an understanding of duties, mandates and laws in the workplace.

Joint Health and Safety Certification course Level 2 has been created to educate participants with the information and skills required as JHSC committee members to implement policies and procedures that will create and nurture a safer work environment. Building on what has been learned in Level 1, participants are taught to recognize, assess and recommend controls for hazards found in their organizations and workplaces. This includes understanding how apply relevant legislation, and guidelines to reduce or eliminate hazards. Completion of Level 1 is a prerequisite for this course.
This two day in-class course, will look at hazards broken down into the following topics:
- Safety
- Physical
- Biological
- Chemical
- Musculoskeletal
- Psychosocial
The course uses case studies and statistics to allow participants to assess and recognize hazards that may cause safety concerns or issues.

Our e-learning course will introduce the Alberta workforce to joint work site health and safety committees (HSCs) and health and safety representatives (H&S reps). This course was developed to aid employers and employees with their transition to comply with Alberta’s updated Occupational Health & Safety Act. Did you know? As of June 1, 2018, all Alberta employers must now comply with Bill 30. If you own or run a business, you may need to establish a Joint Work Site Health & Safety Committee.
This course is currently not an approved course by Alberta Labour.
