Instructional Designer- (Emotional First Aid for Peers and Frontline Workers of the Drug Poisoning Crisis)

Salary Range:  $70,000 – $80,000

What this Position Involves:
This is a pivotal role where you will design and deliver engaging, innovative, and impactful mental health and first aid training content. As an Instructional Designer, you will leverage your expertise in instructional design, eLearning development, and media production to create training programs that make a real difference in people’s lives. You will collaborate with a passionate team of professionals, continuously enhancing our training materials to ensure they meet the highest standards of quality and effectiveness. You will hit the ground running and need to be a self-starter, as this role is designed for someone with experience.

Our Mission
St. John Ambulance is a humanitarian organization and is a member of the international Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (Order of St. John). This non-profit organization has operated in Canada since 1883 with a mission to improve people’s health, safety, and quality of life through training and community services. St. John Ambulance instructors provide first aid and CPR training to over 500,000 people in Canada each year, and its volunteers provide millions of hours of community service across Canada. All proceeds from training and product sales fund St. John Ambulance’s community services, such as Medical First Response, Therapy Dog Services, Disaster Response and youth programming.    

About the EFA Program: 
Funded by Health Canada, St. John Ambulance has been granted a unique opportunity to provide mental health training to peers and frontline workers who assist individuals using drugs and face direct and/or vicarious trauma in their professional and community roles. This program aims to meet critical needs surrounding mental wellness as it applies to peers and frontline workers of the drug poisoning crisis, with a focus on providing tools to promote resiliency and reducing the impact of grief and burnout in the frontline workforce.

What You Will be Doing:

Designing Impactful Content

  • Oversee and coordinate course development timelines. This includes creating course roadmaps, project plans, and outlines to ensure deadlines and key milestones are achieved.
  • Design, develop, and deliver engaging instructor-led, online, and hybrid learning content.
  • Ensure courses align with best practices in instructional design and adult learning principles.
  • Develop and implement interactive activities, quizzes, and multimedia elements to enhance learner engagement.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather and curate content that meets instructional goals.
  • Produce and edit multimedia content (e.g., videos, audio, graphics) to support course delivery.

Managing Learning Systems

  • Manage course setup, organization, and delivery within the Brightspace LMS.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to course delivery.

Ensuring Excellence:

  • Review and test courses for QA to ensure functionality, accessibility, and user experience meet organizational standards.
  • Maintain course materials and ensure updates reflect changes in content or instructional needs.
  • Maintain the integrity of St. John Ambulance’s brand and visual styles

Media Production:

  • Create professional-quality multimedia assets using tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or equivalent.
  • Incorporate visual design principles to create aesthetically appealing and effective learning materials.

Collaborating with Stakeholders:

  • Partner with subject matter experts (SMEs), SJA Training Team, and stakeholders to design and refine courses.
  • Provide training and support to instructors and team members on using materials and online learnings tools effectively.
  • Manage contracts for design, language translation, and final production services, as directed for specific projects

What We are Looking For:

  • A candidate who aligns with our values and demonstrates kindness in their interactions.
  • Deep empathy and understanding of the drug poisoning crisis in Canada, and a willingness to help those directly and indirectly impacted by the crisis. 
  • Proven experience in instructional design and eLearning development.
  • Proficiency in Brightspace LMS..
  • Media production experience, including video editing, graphic design, and/or audio production.
  • Expertise with eLearning authoring tools and multimedia tools.
  • Familiarity with SCORM, xAPI, and accessibility standards. 
  • Understanding of HTML/CSS for basic troubleshooting within an LMS.
  • Advanced working knowledge of tools like Microsoft Office Suite,      OneDrive, Planner, Microsoft Teams and Zoom (essential).
  • Project management and vendor relations experience.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and SJA training programs. 
  • Strong time management, analytical and interpersonal skills required, along with a high degree of attention to detail
  • Experience in creating microlearning or modularized content.
  • Knowledge of instructional strategies for diverse learning audiences.
  • Familiarity with gamification and interactive learning design.
  • Fluency in English is required. French language verbal and written skills are highly desirable

Working Conditions: 

  • Overtime and schedule flexibility may be required from time to time
  • Some travel within Canada may be required
